ATTENDANCE CUP WINNERS

Week beg 16th January
Ash class
Week beg 23rd January
Daisy class
Congratulations to the 47 children who were in school every day last term. Could we have even more children between January and April?
ACCESS THROUGH PDJ
We know that many of you come to school through the Junior school. Please do not cut across the field in these damp conditions as it is cutting up the surface and destroying the grass.
PARENT GOVERNOR
Have you thought that you would like to know more about how the school is run? Would you like to support this? Are you able to hold a balanced view of issues? A parent governor is drawn from parents and carers of children at the school. We have a vacancy for a parent governor. If you would like more information or have a chat with other parent governors, please contact the Chair of Governors through the school office. For more information visit http://www.westberks.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=21792
PDSA
If being a governor does not appeal to you and you would like to support the school in a different way, why not
Come along and join the Parents association. You can get involved as much or as little as you want. The next meeting on Feb 21st will have a session to brainstorm new fundraising ideas and we'd love to hear yours.
BIRTHDAYS
Thank you to those who replied to our request for feedback regarding birthday treats. There was a mixed response but most people appreciated the need to change for the children’s safety. I’m sure if it was your child that was in danger you would also appreciate other parents’ support. Parents have also been anxious at times about the cost of treats for the whole class
In light of this we ask that children do not bring in birthday goodies of any sort to share with the class e.g. sweets, cake, effective from half term.
Thank you for your understanding over this.
THUNK CHALLENGE!
What can you do with a paperclip or paperclips?
PAINT
I am sure that you will be aware that our boat and train on the playground are in need of a lick of paint.
We would be grateful of any donations of external paint- bright colours (including white).
If you feel that you could also volunteer some time to do the painting; that offer would also be gratefully accepted! We’ll wait until the weather is a bit kinder.
CLUBS
Clubs for the Year 2 pupils, start on week beginning Jan 30th.
If your child is in the Gardening Club please provide wellies.

FOOD

We would like your views regarding a concern we have at school.
There are an increasing number of children with medical conditions. We have diabetic children, children with lactose intolerance and severe nut allergies along with some other less threatening allergies. It is very difficult to monitor what these children are eating when other children bring “treats” into school. I am sure that you can appreciate that as our children are very young they are not always able to decide what they should and shouldn’t eat even if it could be life threatening. In light of this we are considering not allowing birthday sweets but would appreciate some feedback from parents.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Joseph Hunt in Year 2. His was selected as runner up for his poem ‘My Autumn Friend’ in the Under 8 category for the Blue Peter Book of the Year 2011.
CLUBS
Staff will be providing a selection of clubs for the Year 2 pupils, starting on Jan 30th.

MUMS DAY March 9th

Mums (or carers, grannies, aunts). Please keep this date free in your diary. You will be invited into school for the morning (or as much of it as you can manage). It will be a chance for you to share some of the experience your child has at school and to help Celebrate Mother’s Day.
Dads, you will be invited in June.
PDSA
The PDSA raised just over £3000 at the Christmas Fayre. Thanks for all your support and for the hard work of the PDSA committee and helpers.

CHOCOLATE
PDSA
Last year the Chocolate tombola stall was extremely successful but to be able to run this stall we need chocolate .On Thursday 1st December we are holding a chocolate donation day! Children are asked to bring in some chocolate and in return they will have some time in school to play a game that they have brought in to share with their friends.
HEAD LICE!
Has your child had a visit from head lice yet? Unfortunately it doesn’t matter how careful you are they can make an appearance. It would be great if as a school we could all make a big effort at the same time to get rid of them. There is a leaflet being sent out with this newsletter with more information.
SECRET PRESENT ROOM
As part of the Infant School contribution to the Christmas Fair, we will again be offering the children the chance to buy a present for their parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles etc. in a “Secret Present Room.”
The children will be able to pick a present which will be gift wrapped for them. Please have a look in your cupboards for unwanted gifts that would be suitable as presents i.e. unused toiletries, jewellery, chocolates, perfume, socks, aftershave etc. That you could donate .
P.E.
Please make sure that your child has a PE kit in school every day. It can take a lot of time to sort out children without kits at the start of PE lessons. The children do not get very dirty at this stage and kits may be left in school until the next holiday when they will be sent home for a wash.

ASHBOURNE WAY
Even more parking difficulties are expected next week when Ashbourne Way is scheduled to be resurfaced. It will take 5 days starting on Nov 11th. Please factor this into your journey to school. This could be worse at the end of the day than at the start.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Some infectious diseases are reappearing in the UK, most notably measles and mumps. Attached to this newsletter is some information from the school nurse.

CHRISTMAS
The School Christmas Fair is getting closer and we will again be offering the children the chance to buy a present for their parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles etc. in a “Secret Present Room .
The children will be able to pick a present which will be gift wrapped for them. This room is always very popular and raises a lot of money but it cannot be run without your help, could you have a look in your cupboards for unwanted gifts that would be suitable as presents ie. unused toiletries, jewellery, chocolates, perfume, socks, aftershave etc.
If you have any suitable gifts please take them to the school office by Monday 28th November 2011.
BALLS
Now that the field is becoming wetter and muddier there are more children playing on the playground. This means that there is not enough space to play football at playtime so if your child asks if they can bring in a football there isn’t really much point in carrying it to school.

In addition to as teaching during the day, Mrs Smith has worked many hours after school providing children with some interesting clubs e.g. basketball, lacrosse, quiz and organising the school Library. This year we were supporting “The Barn”, project supporting families in need. We sent 4 boxfuls of food and raised £62 with the retiring collection.

NEWSLETTER
9th September 2011
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Happy New Year- well a school year anyway. Hopefully we are all feeling refreshed and ready for action. The school is looking great after some building work was carried out during the holidays. Every class now has a classroom door and the toilets have had a makeover.
FS CURRICULUM EVENING
There will be a Curriculum Evening for parents of Children in the Foundation Stage at 7pm on Tuesday 27th Sept. This will be a chance for you to see what happens during the school day in Foundation, to be aware of expectations and to ask questions. Further details will be sent out directly from Foundation.
STAFFING
We welcome three new teaching members of staff. Mrs McCracken and Miss Butler will join Mrs Quinton in the Foundation Stage and Miss Terry is joining Mrs Webb and Mrs Wilkinson in Year 2. Ms Hicklin, Miss Ellender and Miss Hawkes will be in Year 1.
ATTENDANCE
Congratulations to Dean Horton, Kacper Kleba, Kiera Regan, Sofia Silva and Matthew Thompson for achieving 100% attendance at school during 2010-2011.
This year we are going adhere closely to the guidelines set out by West Berkshire regarding absences during school term time. This will bring the Infant School in line with the Junior School. Please read the leaflet sent out with this Newsletter.
In order to encourage good attendance we are introducing an attendance cup trophy to which the class with the best attendance for the week will be presented. At the end of term the class with the best attendance will receive a treat. At the end of the year the class with the best attendance will enjoy a visit to Krazy Klub..
LIBRARY CHALLENGE
Please bring your Circus Stars library certificates as soon as possible so that we can send away for the medals. This scheme is running until the end of September so if you haven’t already read 6 books from the library there is still time!
SCHOOL LIBRARY
We have a new library at school. It looks wonderful and the children are eager to start using it. Children will have the opportunity to do some research in the library during the school day and books will be lent out every Friday. We are desperate for helpers to support with this. If you could spare and hour on a Friday afternoon, please let us know, either in the office or through your child’s class teacher.
You will not be left on your own to run the library and with enough volunteers we can work out a rota so that you do not have to come every Friday.
THUNK CHALLENGE
Every month we have a Thunk Challenge. As the title suggests- thinking is involved. There isn’t always a correct answer. These challenges can be a valuable activity for you to do with your child and can promote lots of discussion. All entries are celebrated in assembly and the best entries receive a certificate.
Imagine you are the Queen (or king). What would be on your shopping list?
You can write a list or draw and label the items. Entries in by Thursday 29th September.
NEW YEAR -NEW START- PDSA
There will be a meeting of the Parsons Down Schools Association on Tuesday 13th Sept at 7pm. For the parents new to the school, this is the Parent/Teacher’s association which is run between the two schools as part of the Partnership. Please come along.
GARDEN AWARD SCHEME
Over the holiday the school was presented with an award from the Berkshire Gardens Trust. The assessors were impressed by the gardening club run by Mrs Quinton. The children were able to discuss and answer questions about garden plants. They saw hopefully some gardeners of the future. The assessors also commented on the hanging baskets, the wildlife garden and the National Lottery funded garden. Several awards were presented on the night but we were the only project to receive Highly Commended. Thank you to all staff, parents and governors who contributed towards the school being given this award.
The award was accepted on behalf of the school by a former pupil Sophie Payen, who together with her family helped to set up the garden.
